With a sound, look and musical authenticity all her own, Lorianna Matera is a talent whose time has come. Combining her traditional country music roots with a love and feel for the bluegrass experience, Lorianna has been honing her unique vocal style since the age of 3, when her first memory is of standing in front of the family stereo and singing along with the likes of Porter Waggoner, Loretta Lynn, and Merle Haggard. Growing up in a family of six children on a farm in rural New Jersey, Lorianna lived for her father’s annual Fourth of July party on the farm. The local country band that played there held her transfixed, and set her on the path toward Nashville and the career that has led to her current project, “Nobody’s Angel.” “Whenever there was a live band playing, everything else disappeared and I just fixated on that, to the exclusion of all else,’’ Lorianna says, looking back on her childhood. “And I’m still like that. I really am. I had a sense that music and being a singer was my calling, even before I really understood what that meant.’’
With a voice as distinctive as any in country music today, Lorianna excels at translating universal life experiences into words, giving her music a rich, textured sense of emotion and a remarkable depth of feeling. One of her early mentors in Nashville was the legendary Dottie West, who Lorianna toured with the in the early 1990s. Since then she has collaborated with respected writers and artists such as Don Henry, Keith Perry, and Joy Lynn White, and has performed in recent years at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall and Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium.
Her new CD, “Nobody’s Angel’’, produced by noted Nashville bassist Dave Pomeroy, was released in August 2006 and includes the musical contributions of such stellar singers and players as Larry Cordle, Jon Randall, Tim O’Brien and Sam Bush, and the album is her most personal work to date. “This project is like coming home for me”, says Lorianna. “These songs connect me to a time when people used music to tell very personal stories, carry on a sense of tradition and celebrate their heritage.” This timeless quality is one of the most distinctive aspects of "Nobody's Angel", a project that brings together the best of the old and new into a unique sound that captures the spirit and emotions of a very special artist - Lorianna Matera.
